MidCentral DHB Dental Health services during COVID-19
Last updated on 15 February 2021
As outlined by the Ministry of Health, health services that respond to emergency and acute care needs are considered essential services, and these services will continue to be available throughout all alert levels. This includes acute dental services from primary care providers.
If you are experiencing trauma or have extensive bleeding
If you are experiencing an emergency, you should go to the hospital emergency department. If you are also experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, it is imperative that you phone ahead so that staff can make the appropriate preparations to ensure your safety as well as the safety of other patients and staff in the emergency unit. For other acute care, we would encourage community members to start by contacting your normal local dentist.
If you require acute dental care
Patients that cannot be adequately treated in a private dental practice OR who are suspected of having positive symptoms for COVID-19 should be triaged and referred to the dental unit at the hospital (available on 06 350 8640).
The hospital dental unit is staffed from 8.30am to 4.30pm during the week and on call between 8am and 8pm 7 days a week.
Should you have any questions, require advice, or wish to discuss a case, please ring the dental unit on 06 350 8640 and you will be directed to the appropriate person.
Children and adolescents under 18 years
MidCentral's Child and Adolescent Oral Health Service provides support, advice and free dental treatment for children aged from 0-17 years of age. During the COVID-19 Alert Level 4 lockdown, these services were temporarily limited to assessments and Relief of Pain (ROP) Services, and were conducted at designated clinical sites.
